Many students approach Max/MSP programming after already having an understanding of Ableton Live's system of instrument, MIDI, and effect racks. This presentation demonstrates how Loudon Stearns and Erin Barra teach basic synthesis concepts and max patching by re-making common Ableton synthesizers and effects with very simple max patches placed in Ableton racks.
This intermediate step helps the student move from Ableton's rack system (where they are already comfortable) into a modular synthesis mindset before delving into Max patching. Additionally, the simple Max patches, dubbed the "Simplest" Max for Live device s(amplifier, delay, signal generator, filter, etc), provide a perfect collection of devices to build upon when developing more complex patches.

The collection of devices will be provided free to all attendees and this pedagogical approach has been proven effective in Berklee Online classes.
